Yoga & Mindfulness
At Avonhead Montessori in Christchurch, we are passionate about the many benefits that Yoga & Mindfulness exercises can offer tamariki in their learning environment. Our daycare centre teachers take children through amazing experiences where they listen to calming music in a relaxed space, in this moment they are encouraged to focus on their breathing and to let go of their worries as they prepare for their fun day ahead. These special moments often end with some great stretching, which supports children to focus on their balance as they discover and listen to the different ways their bodies can move.
Excursions are a valuable learning experience and great fun for the children. We schedule trips in Christchurch according to the curriculum and community events and are usually inundated with parent help for the trips, which is great. All excursions are thoroughly planned and attention to health and safety risks is continually assessed with a strong emphasis on high teacher to child ratios. Permission is required from caregivers before the children go on any excursion.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Our Parent Interviews at Avonhead Montessori, Christchurch are done every 6 months. Parents/Caregivers are provided with a 15 minute slot where your child’s primary teacher will discuss your child’s progress and what learning goals are in place. Our childcare centre teachers also work with families one on one to discuss your own aspirations for your child at home and how we can work with you within our day care centre to achieve these outcomes for your child. Our parents at Avonhead Montessori Christchurch really value the undivided attention that is focussed on their child’s learning and development within these interviews.
‘If teaching is to be effective with young children it must assist them to advance on the way to independence’
– Maria Montessori
Family Evenings and Involvement
We highly value and encourage involvement from all of our families.
We hold regular parent evenings, once a term, which may include a guest speaker, focus on a specific topic, or simply a fish and chip evening. We also hold an annual Children’s Christmas party to celebrate each year with all families, children and staff. We hold formal parent teacher interviews once a year with dedicated time spent with your child’s profile teacher reviewing your child’s time at preschool and any questions/aspirations you may have.
School Readiness Programme
We run a dedicated transition to school programme as part of the preschool programme. Based on the early childhood education curriculum, this programme has been designed to support 4 year old children and their families when starting the process of transitioning to school.
Our aim for the transition to school group is to ensure a smooth and successful transition into the school environment for our children and families, preparing children both socially, emotionally and educationally for the next steps in their journey. We aim to enrich children’s knowledge and challenge their thinking; empowering their capabilities for their next educational journey. We also aim to prepare children for school in a number of ways with self-help skills, self-control and communication forming vital pillars of the programme. This approach fosters and develops necessary dispositions and skills required for positive learning and development e.g. communication skills, information skills, problem solving skills, self-management, competitive skills, social and cooperative skills, physical skills and work and study skills. We have links and relationships with our local schools which help foster and support a smooth transition for both the child and their whānau.
Portfolios & Storypark
We use an awesome app called Storypark, which allows whānau to follow their child’s early learning journey and to ensure you don’t miss out on important centre communications.
Photos, videos and audio capture your child’s learning so you never miss a treasured moment again. You and your family can also feel more engaged in your child’s development, and you decide who you would like to invite to experience your childs learning journey with you. A perfect way to share those special moments with loved ones down the line or overseas.
Although we love to use Storypark as an online platform to communicate with parents, we also use paper portfolios for each child.
Children enjoy finding their paper portfolio and reflecting on their past activities at the centre. It is a fantastic way for children to engage in self-recognition and reflect on their personal development, as well as being a treasured keepsake for their 21st Birthday!
